Backseat Girl

lyrics

Backseat Girl

Diesel and dirt finally screeched to a halt
The steps were too high for my feet
I stumbled aboard in my oversized clothes
The doors hissed and creaked as they struggled to close
I paid the bully the money I owed
All eyes on me as we pulled away slow
But she kept her eyes on the street

Chewing her gum, ignoring the world
She had a band on her T-shirt that i’d probably never heard of
I bet their songs were all about her

Don’t waste your time
You can try, you can try
But you’ll never be cool enough for Backseat Girl

I was growing up fast I was styling my hair
I was desperate to catch her eye
But she’d always be in that world of her own
Where guitars are heavy and the drums explode
Her T-shirts became my Rolling Stone
So many records that I had to buy

Well she was older than me and she was learning to drive
There were rumours that her boyfriend was nearly twenty five
My friends all told me I was out of my mind

They said ‘Don’t waste your time
You can try, you can try
But you’ll never be cool enough for Backseat Girl’

Well I remember the day she made me a man
There was only one free seat
She saw my guitar and my time had come
She called me over and I sat down stunned
I tried to speak but I’d lost my tongue
She said ‘you’re sweet but you’re a bit too young
but i’ll give you a kiss on the cheek’

Well it was almost a week before I washed my face
I was grinning so hard that my cheeks began to ache
Everybody asked me to teach them how

But I said ‘Don’t waste your time
You can try, you can try
But you’ll never be cool enough for Backseat
You’ll never be cool enough for the backseat
You’ll never be cool enough for Backseat Girl’
